What’s it like being a consultant in THEMA?

We asked two of our newly hired consultants, Tora and Asbjørn, about their first six months at THEMA. What projects have they worked on? What have they learned? And what stands out the most from their first time as consultants in THEMA?

Can you tell us a bit about a project you have worked on this fall?

“Even though I have been at THEMA for a relatively short period, I have already had the opportunity to work on several exciting projects,” says Tora. “One of the projects I worked on this fall involves developing a knowledge base to assist Nordic authorities in designing regulations that promote effective solutions for consumer flexibility. The work has included analyses of existing regulations and evaluations of pilot projects for consumer flexibility in Norway – it has been incredibly educational!”

Asbjørn highlights a project THEMA has worked on regarding reserve markets. “Reserve markets ensure that the power market remains balanced at all times. We have been working extensively on examining how this market will develop in the future and which market participants we expect to see. Reserve markets are undergoing significant development both in the Nordics and the rest of Europe, and it’s exciting that we at THEMA can follow this so closely!”

Has anything about THEMA, the consulting industry, or the power sector surprised you?

“I have been pleasantly surprised by how much influence you have over your own workday,” says Tora. “There is a great deal of flexibility, and you have the opportunity to influence which topics you want to work with.”

Asbjørn, on the other hand, says he has been most surprised by how complex the power sector is. “There are so many considerations to balance when determining the direction of tomorrow’s power system, from technical limitations to policies and regulations that set the framework for development. Fortunately, I have great colleagues who are passionate about answering these questions.”

What stands out the most from your first months at THEMA?

“A highlight was the strategy trip to Vienna in October,” says Asbjørn. “We visited to some large power plants and had plenty of social activities in a beautiful city with great colleagues. I also want to highlight the Christmas party, which we as new hires had the honour of organizing. The limbo competition generated a lot of enthusiasm!”

Tora highlights the social activities: “I have participated in everything from scavenger hunts in Oslo and chess tournaments to sports activities, knitting nights, and informal dinners. It has been very enjoyable, especially as a new hire, to have so many opportunities to get to know my colleagues better in a relaxed and informal setting outside the office.”
