Like most people who specialize in electric energy technology and smart grids, Tobias Aas wanted a job within the power sector. He could have chosen the grid sector or perhaps a power production company, but he ultimately ended up in the consultancy industry – and naturally, at a consultancy firm specializing in the power sector.
So far, Tobias is enjoying working life: “The transition from student life has been smooth. After five years of studying, it was nice to start something new. The biggest change has probably been that unlike during your studies, the leaning often happens while you’re delivering the job – for better or worse!”
He has several examples of this: “THEMA recently delivered a project where the goal was to calculate the probability of activating a conditional grid connection agreement under different scenarios for power consumption growth. It was a very interesting problem to work on, mainly because it involved many variables and dependencies. What made it particularly challenging was that we always had to think several steps ahead: there were many decisions along the way that couldn’t be reversed since we had to run multiple model simulations in a short amount of time”.
In addition to working on interesting projects, Tobias has attended many social events since he started: “The company trip to Vienna was definitely the social highlight for me. I had been working for about two months at that point, so it was a great way to get to know my colleagues better. We got to see Vienna and went on some lovely tours and visited vineyards”.
Tobias has a few tips for others considering applying to THEMA: “Most people who apply to THEMA either have experience from the power sector or is interested in learning about it. To stand out, I think it’s important to be aware of what your ‘edge’ is – something a bit unusual, but still relevant to the power sector. It could for example be an interest in the hydrogen market, knowledge of load flow analysis, or an interest in optimizing the fiscal framework for the power industry “.
