THEMA, in collaboration with the technology company Itera, has issued a third edition of the Electricity Market Report. The report is a semi-annual publication and contains reoccurring sections covering the electricity retail market, prices and products, and an overview of new relevant regulations in the industry. In addition, each edition has a unique theme. This fall we investigate technology.
Data as a value driver in the end user market
New technology helps facilitate the green shift in the industry and can contribute to better customer experiences. Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services, advanced data analysis and machine learning are important technological trends in electricity retail covered by the report. A special emphasis has been put upon how these technologies impacts the sector, and which opportunities they give the electricity companies.
Technology as a support function in the value chain
An overview of companies providing technical infrastructure to the electricity retailers is found in the “Frenemies” chapter. Their solutions support all functions in the value chain and have a central role in billing and customer management. Even though established players already have a strong foothold in the Norwegian market, new international companies are looking to gain ground.
Higher industry margins in 2020 compared to 2019
In addition to technology, the issue contains a new financial part with key figures from the largest electricity retailers. Overall, the market experiences higher profitability in 2020 than in 2019.
Altogether, the reoccurring chapters about market, product and price, customers and regulations have been updated with new numbers and contents – all with an overarching focus on technology and the opportunities it creates within the retail electricity space. Ultimately, a main finding is when comparing the spot price products from the established electricity retailers to the new digital players, there is a significant difference in surcharge.
