What have you been working on during your summer at THEMA?
Ida: I have been working on a number of projects, both for specific customers and on THEMA’s own price forecast models. From day one I was activated and included by clever and pleasant colleagues. The projects have included contributing to THEMA’s price forecast for electrolysers used in green hydrogen production, financial valuations of renewable energy production and mapping of grid capacity demand in the transition from fossile sources to renewables. I have also gained insight into technical and economic aspects of solar, wind and hydropower, as well as energy storage technologies like hydrogen and batteries.
Alfred: I have described and analyzed how grid loss works in various European countries, collected and commented on the latest energy policies from the EU, and created a newsletter about the development of demand, grids, regulations and legislation for renewable power in Sweden. I have also worked with analysing wind power and participated in writing offers for new projects.
David: I got to work with a lot of different issues! From the very first day I was assigned to estimate the growth potential of solar power, and have later been involved in projects related to everything from strategy to price forecast. In addition, I have created an investment analysis for the electrification of aviation, which was both instructive and very meaningful.
How did you experience the internship?
Ida: The internship has been challenging, especially since you work interdisciplinary and have to familiarize yourself with new subject areas outside you area of expertise. Despite this I have really enjoyed the summer, and I have learned a great deal in a short time, both related to the subjects, but also about being a consultant. THEMA has a very strong professional environment, and a lot of exiting things are happening in the energy industry now!
THEMA is also a sporty gang, and has organized many social events, such as going to a climbing park, on a sauna boat and of course a summer party, all of which have been really fun!
Alfred: It has been a very educational internship, with interesting tasks and helpful colleagues who have taught me a lot about the functions of the energy systems and what it is like to work within this sector. I was also able to benefit from my previous experience, and had backing from colleagues who valued my work.
David: The summer at THEMA has been absolutely fantastic, thanks to very nice and talented colleagues from whom I have learned a lot! Since you get to work on several projects at the same time, you are constantly being challenged. I don’t think you can find many places where the statement “no day is the same” is truer. It’s all topped of with action-packed social events – I’ve been both far out on the fjord and high up in the air.
What would you like to say to students who are considering applying for an internship in THEMA?
Ida: If you are interested in the transition to a renewable society, green technology, energy markets and energy policy, I strongly recommend applying for an internship at THEMA. Ida: If you are interested in the transition to a renewable society, green technology, energy markets and energy policy, I strongly recommend applying for an internship at THEMA.
Alfred: I can highly recommend an internship in THEMA, especially if you like to work on different projects at the same time, are interested in the energy sector, market design, market analysis, sustainability, price development, modeling and so on. If you have experience and/or knowledge of the energy sector it can help you get started faster, but there are many opportunities to learn on the job!
David: In THEMA we work with current issues, so it is important to stay up to date with the news! Think about why you want to become a consultant in this particular industry and don’t hold anything back in showing commitment. It is also newer a bad idea to practice on solution methodology for the case interview, but don’t worry – they make you feel very comfortable and give you assistance along the way.
We wish Ida, Alfred and David the best of luck with the rest of their studies. Hope to see you again soon!
